As we mentioned in previous articles depression is a normal response as part of our daily lives such as the loss of a job, the death of a loved one, or illness. Over 30 million Americans suffer from depression and the amount is increasing in an alarming rate. Depression may be a mental disorder that can affect the way you eat and sleep, and the way you feel about yourself. In this article, we will discuss how to treat depression with herbs.

1. St. John wort
St. John wort works like some antidepressant medication such as Prozac and Zoloft. Intake of St. john wort helps to increase appetite, more interest in life, greater self-esteem and restoration of normal sleeping patterns.

2. Skullcap
Skullcap helps to reduce the symptoms of mild to moderate depression by increasing the amount of serotonin in the body by inhibiting the reuptake of Serotonin, and inhibits two chemicals interleukin-6 and Cortisol known to cause anxiety and depression.

3. Hops
Hops are the flowers of humulus lupulus. They have been used widely to relieve insomnia and help in promoting positive support for occasional anxious feelings, restlessness, nervousness, tension and symptoms of depression.

4. Passionflower
Passionflower contains flavonoids and monoflavonoids that help to promote emotional balance through relaxation of the nervous system. It also acts as an anxiolytic aiding relaxation, relief from occasional anxiety and panic resulting from stress, and to ease tension.

5. Calamus root
Calamus root has been used for centuries in strengthening immune system, relieve pain, and preventing inflammation. It also helps to ward off fatigue, increase body’s energy, reduce stress, anxiety and depression.

6. Schizandra berry
Schizandra berry is a creeping vine with small red berries native to Northern China. Traditionally schizandra berry has been used widely to stimulate immune defense, balance body functions, normalizing physical activity and boosting energy. Recent study shows that it also helps to increase the body’s resistance to stress, anxiety, mood swing and depression.

You might have observed that many people become very dull and inactive in winter. In fact, some people even experience a deep depression and fail to carry out normal routine tasks. This state is called Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD. It is also known as the Winter Blues. During winter, many people suffer from SAD. Some of the prominent symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder are that people find it hard to stay awake for long. For some it becomes difficult to sleep. You also feel fatigued and consequently, you are not able to carry out routine matters in a normal way. Feelings of sadness, guilt and despair are also commonly observed.

Dr. Norman Rosenthal coined the term “Winter Blues”. He came up with this expression while he was researching the effects of winter on people’s moods. The Winter Blues is actually a clinical condition, which is primarily caused by lack of sunlight in winter. According to some doctors, lack of sunlight can cause depression. Because of this, SAD is a state that needs to be observed over time. Moreover, they also assert that lack of sunlight alone does not act as a stressor with SAD- in fact, low temperatures also restricts our activity.

Mostly people in their twenties suffer from SAD, particularly women. Milder SAD has been reported in children and adolescents. The most common symptoms are oversleeping, cravings for carbohydrates, weight gain and anxiety. Keeping this in mind, SAD, or the winter blues, is a clinical condition.

Unlike the general perception, the Winter Blues is a medical state and not just a mood swing brought about by the cold weather as poets portray it. It has a direct link with absence or lack of light, which is required by your body to function normally.

One of the most popular treatments for treating winter blues is light therapy. According to experts, sunlight or simulated sunlight is the best treatment for SAD. You can find many products in the market for treating SAD, including dawn simulators, light boxes and customised desk lamps. The main idea of these products is to reproduce what you are lacking.

These light boxes create the equivalent, or more, light that you experience when you look outside during sunny days. The dawn simulators work with timers and increase the light in your room before you wake up. By gradual exposure to light, patients find it easier to wake, and consequently feel more relaxed. Desk lamps are the handiest preference for those who do not intend to spend too much time on this treatment. You can use the lamps as a part of your home or office furniture.

The Winter Blues can also be treated with medicines. However, medications like tricyclics are not effective in this case, as it can make you feel all the sleepier. Non-sedative SSRI medicines, including Paroxetine, Lustral and Prozac, are useful in managing the Winter Blues. Psychotropic drugs like lithium and benzodiazepines are not very helpful for curing SAD. Counselling can also help certain individuals to overcome Seasonal Affective Disorder.

In this article, we will discuss how to treat depression with homeopathy.

1. Aurum metallicum
Aurum metallicum is renowned for its ability to cure the deepest imaginable depressions: suicidal states by providing hope, feeling of worthiness and self esteem. This type of person is usually idealistic and goad oriented. It is very surprising to see that a single patient with a lifetime of joyless existence bloom into happiness after aurum pays for every hour of our years of study.

2. Ignatia
Ignatia originates from the tincture of strychnos ignatia beans of a small tree native to the Philippines containing a substantial amount of strychnine (used in rat poison) and brucine (a bitter alkaloid similar to strychnine). Iganatia relieves the depression caused by an event of grief and sadness.

3. Natrum Muriaticum
Natrum muriaticum is one of the most psychologically complex and poignant remedies in our materia medica. There is an opposite presentation in which the patient seems abnormally open and can discuss even intimate aspects of his life, apparently not at all embarrassed. When a loss or a serious rejection occurs the patient experiences abnormally prolonged grief and depression. Natrum mutiaticum helps to overcome the deep sorrow that people suffered in silence.

4. Sepia
Sepia is a Homeopathic remedy that helps with bouts of depression from loss of sunlight, but it can be differentiated from aurum by its grief, fatigue, sarcasm and irritability aspects. Sepia is especially helpful in treating depression caused by indifference, weepy, angry, overwhelmed, exhausted and depression associated with menopause.

5. Pulsatilla
In external use, the fresh plant of pulsatilla is an irritant herb and produces a benumbing sensation when chewed. It is a powerful herb in treating people with signs of manic depression.

What is Ecotherapy?

Ecotherapy is a term used to decribe the benefits of doctors prescribing a ‘Walk in the Park’ as a means of helping people with mental health problems. It is well known that the first and perhaps the major symptoms of stress or mental illness is the breakdown between a person and the people around them. The effect of this can be seen in the home and the work place leading to erratic behaviour, strained relationships and social isolation. There is also an ecological element to this condition, we as humans suffer these problems because we have the ability to think and reason, therefore we may see ourselves as being apart and perhaps superior to the natural world. However, despite this air of superiority we still retain primal animal instincts that manifest themselves when we become mentally ill, are under stress or a perceived threat. Some people advocate that ecotherapy is about mending this rift between people and nature in order to become whole, reconnect with the natural world around us, and put an end to a vicious circle of abuse through direct experience of wild nature. Incorporated within ecotherapy is the awareness of current ecological issues and the sustainability of our life style with regard to the damage it does to planet Earth.

What is Colour Therapy?

Colour therapy is a complementary medicine combining colour psychology and spiritual healing that has its roots in ancient Egypt and India.

Colour Psychology
Colour affects us physically and psychologically, directly and indirectly and from a combined psychological, physiological, and spiritual perspective. From both the psychological and physiological perspective colour affects us directly when it enters the eye and is transmitted to the emotional centre of the brain the hypothalamus that in turn affects the pituitary gland that controls the entire endocrine system the network of glands including the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal, as well as the pancreas, ovaries, and testes. The thymus and pineal glands, and kidney are sometimes considered endocrine organs. The endocrine system can affect moods and could account for Seasonal Affective disorder or S.A.D, it also affects sex drive, energy levels, and weight gain to name a few.

Spiritual Healing
An aura is an envelope of vital energy, which radiates from everything in nature including minerals, plants, animals and humans. The aura is often described as a multi coloured mist that has an assortment of boundaries and properties. The aura binds our physical bodies to our spirituality; it is not in anyway separate from our physical body but they combine as one unit that makes up the whole person. The aura acts as a prism to divide white light into its component colours that are sent to different coloured layers around our bodies, these auric layers correspond to chakras or energy centres which in turn relate to major organs in our bodies. We need a balance of all the colours in white light to remain healthy, an imbalance can affect our psychological well-being and cause physical illness; it is the task of the colour therapist to correct any imbalance present in the auric layers.

Ecotherapy and Colour Therapy

The basis for combining these two therapies is that while we are highly evolved animals we still respond to the colours in nature in an instinctive way the same as other species. Generally, this instinct is based upon the need to look and feel good in order to attract a mate, it also relates to the need for sunlight to regulate our body clock; we need to connect with nature to keep fit and healthy. Therefore, colour therapy as part of ecotherapy addresses our primal needs and instincts that allow us to work in the environment that we have created. Once these needs have been met we as humans can move on to talk about these issues on the thinking and talking level of psychology and therapy, in order to bring about a positive change in our lives and the world around us.

For example, simply connecting with nature and getting out into green open spaces for a bit of ecotherapy is for some people an achievement; the green grass will help calm frayed nerves and bring harmony with the people around you. The blue sky and natural sunlight will help suppress daytime production of melatonin and help you sleep at night; it has been proven that the exercise is also good for your mental welfare. Given this is an instinctive reaction to nature all you have to do is get out of the house and take a look at it.
