Most poisonings occur when parents or caregivers are home but not paying attention. The most dangerous potential poisons are medicines, cleaning products, antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, pesticides, furniture polish, gasoline, kerosene and lamp oil. Be especially vigilant when there is a change in routine. Holidays, visits to and from grandparents’ homes, and other special events may bring greater risk of poisoning if the usual safeguards are defeated or not in place.

If the victim is alert and ingestion is recent, with the exception of fuel oils and caustic soaps, induce vomiting.

* To cause someone to vomit, use syrup of ipecac, which is often in first aid kits.

* Do not induce vomiting with an oily poison because the substance may enter the lungs where it will create even greater problems. Small amounts of oily poisonous substances are best left alone to pass through the body. Milk may dissolve some of the oil and reduce the damage to cells as it passes out of the body.

Medicinal Ingredients:

* All finished product and ingredients used in the manufacture of the product should comply with the specifications of Schedule B pharmacopoeial or equivalent standard.

* Store medicine, cleaners, paints/varnishes and pesticides in their original packaging in locked cabinets or containers, out of sight and reach of children.

* Install a safety latch - that locks when you close the door - on child-accessible cabinets containing harmful products.

* Purchase and keep all medicines in containers with safety caps. Discard unused medication.

Preventing poisoning at home

You can reduce the likelihood of accidental poisoning in your home. Below are some suggested steps.

* Store all medicines, vitamins and poisonous substances in child-proof containers and lock them in an area that is well out of reach of children. Be vigilant not only with medicines but also with common household products, such as bleach, polishes, paint thinners, white spirit, oven cleaners and paint.

* Never store dangerous products in everyday containers such as milk bottles or drinking glasses. A child may associate these with food or drink and try them out. Check the garden for poisonous plants and berries and remove them.

Directions:

Call a Poison Control Center or hospital emergency center immediately before administering this product. Fill bottle with water or soda pop to fill line on label. Shake vigorously for at least 30 seconds. Drink entire contents as quickly as possible or as directed by a health professional. If previous attempts to contact a Poison Control Center, Emergency Medical Facility, or Health Professional are unsuccessful, continue trying. Save container of poison. Keep patient active and moving.

Whiplash is a relatively common injury that occurs to a person’s neck following a sudden acceleration-deceleration force, most commonly from motor vehicle accidents. The term “whiplash” was first used in 1928. The term “railway spine” was used to describe a similar condition that was common in persons involved in train accidents prior to 1928. The term “whiplash injury” describes damage to both the bone structures and soft tissues, while “whiplash associated disorders” describes a more severe and chronic condition.

Self-Care at Home

Home care is intended to relieve the pain and minimize the amount of inflammation in the soft tissues of the neck.

* Apply ice to the neck for 20 minutes at a time each hour for the first 24 hours while awake. Do not apply ice directly to the skin. Place a towel between the ice and the neck. Continue to use ice therapy until the pain stops. (After you see the doctor, follow his or her directions for ice therapy.)

* Whiplash treatment requires much time and patience and almost always involves physiotherapy, but may also include yoga, light exercise and meditation. Chiropractors are specialists in non-surgical spinal treatments, and they can help identify the source of your pain. Once the source has been determined, the process of treating your body and returning it to full health can begin.

* Whiplash associated disorders (WAD) are often referred to as pain of unclear origin since, by definition, afflicted patients present with symptoms that cannot be identified by imaging or electrophysiological techniques.

Medical Treatment

* Occasionally, disc herniation or skeletal injury of the spine may exist in addition to the soft tissue injury that cannot be captured on MRI.

* Whiplash, the most common traffic injury, leads to neck pain, headache and other symptoms, resulting in a significant burden of disability and health care utilization. Although there are few effective treatments for whiplash, a growing body of evidence suggests that the type and intensity of treatment received shortly after the injury have a long-lasting influence on the prognosis.

* The authors of the article noted that a previous study had shown that 26 of 28 patients, or 93 percent, of patients with chronic whiplash benefited from chiropractic care.

* If you have pain when you move your head or the pain involves your shoulders or arms, your doctor may recommend a soft neck collar or short-term prescription drug to relax the muscles.

For severe pain, doctors often prescribe anti-inflammatory painkillers or muscle relaxants. You can apply ice to the injured area to reduce pain and swelling for up to 20 minutes every hour during the first 24 hours. After that, heat usually provides more relief than cold, as it loosens and relaxes tight muscles. Some patients also find relief in physical therapy, massage, ultrasound, and chiropractic treatments. Your doctor may suggest a series of exercises as soon as

Many new cars today are equipped with automotive navigation systems. These systems use satellite technology to locate the car and provide directions to a location of our choice. The directions are often provided by voice prompts, which describe the path to follow in order to reach our destination. Thanks to the wonders of modern science, we receive this information immediately. The voice prompts can also inform us that we have missed a turn or even taken a wrong turn. Again, we obtain this feedback right away. We have, in many ways, become a society of immediacy. We often expect immediate feedback or immediate gratification and anything less is seen as unfulfilling, slow, or outdated.

Now let’s consider navigating our way to a different type of destination, a destination that most of us find vague and elusive. That destination is health. Imagine a health navigation system implanted in our bodies that is capable of directing us toward that goal. Perhaps it would notify us if our dietary choices are a deviation from the path we should follow. Perhaps it would inform us that our lack of exercise or our need for relaxation are thwarting our efforts to reach our ultimate goal. It may provide prompts in its monotone, mediocre, matter-of-fact voice such as, “To arrive at your destination, put that cookie down.” It may also remind us of activities that we have neglected, such as, “You overlooked exercise again today. Engage in physical exercise at the next possible opportunity.”

But alas, there is no health navigation system available at present. So, how can we find and follow our all-important path to health? One such approach makes use of an age-old, antiquated system. That is, we can measure our proximity to destination health by examining how we feel–physically, mentally, and spiritually. Yet, most of us rarely notice the feedback from this system immediately. It may take days, weeks, or even years before we see or feel the effects of our lifestyle choices, positive or negative. We may need to be hit over the head with a hammer before finally hearing the message. Thus, it would be wise to examine if we are listening to what our bodies have to say, while at the same time exploring how we can become better listeners.

One approach to increasing awareness and listening to our bodies is through receiving acupuncture treatment. As an acupuncturist, I am told by many patients that with regular treatment, they become more aware of their bodies and the way in which their bodies communicate with them. Many patients begin to see patterns that were previously not recognizable. These patterns may include vague low back pain due to lack of exercise, constipation during highly stressful situations, abdominal pain related to not expressing emotions constructively, or energy levels that spike and crash as a result of specific dietary habits. Even though patterns such as these may exist for years, many individuals fail to notice the connection. Once they finally choose to slow down and listen to their bodies, they begin to hear the subtle messages.

In many cases, acupuncture can help to treat these imbalances, but in some cases it may not. And when it cannot, most patients find that their problems are far more manageable with the knowledge of specific causative factors. They are pleased to learn that their lifestyle choices can directly affect how they feel, and that by making different lifestyle choices, as difficult as that may be, they can proactively choose to be healthier. I don’t mean to imply that acupuncture is the only approach to increasing awareness and becoming a better listener. There are many such approaches. I believe that receiving massage or practicing meditation can be helpful for this purpose, as well as meditative activities, such as reading, conscious walking, gardening, or yoga. All of these modalities can help us learn to listen to the messages that our bodies are sending, until the day when we have our health navigation system implanted.

Chronic bloating can be a deal breaker. Dealing with bloating on a daily basis can seriously impede your way of life. How can constant bloating effect your life? Here are a few ways.

Due to Water Retention

Retaining water is one of the most common causes of bloating. When your body decides that it needs to keep some water close, it traps the water from your food in deposits under your skin and keeps it there until it needs it. Sure, sometimes there really isn’t a need to retain water, but your body does strange things sometimes. In the case of water retention, chronic bloating can cause some people to feel fatigued and actually cause them to gain some weight. When experiencing chronic with a side of weight gain, it can take you hours to find something that fits. When scouring your closets looking for something to wear, just keep in mind that there are treatments available to water retention. Taking a diuretic, or water pill, can cause your body to lose its hold on all the retained water; as the water drains away, so does the weight gain keeping you out of your favorite clothes.

Due to Gastrointestinal Disorders

Sometimes chronic bloating is caused by water retention, and sometimes it is caused by something a little more serious. Chronic can be caused by problems in your stomach, or by something wrong further along in your digestive tract. The human digestive system is a well oiled machine, and when that machine gets a clog, or when irritation occurs, bloating is a natural side-effect. Treating chronic in this case is a little more complicated than just going to the store to pick up something. When it comes to chronic caused by stomach or intestinal disorders, you will have to see your doctor or a specialist for treatment.

Due to Stress

With the ever accelerating world of deadlines, departure times, conferences, and just trying to “find time” people are getting stressed. Chronic bloating can be a side effect of all that stress taking its toll on your body. Dealing with stress is a little more complicated than some may think. Figuring out what is causing your stress is the first step to dealing with it. When your stress is built up enough to cause physical symptoms, it is very important that you deal with your stress in a way that is beneficial to your mind, spirit and body. When it comes to dealing with stress, there are some steps you can take to alleviate your stress and get your chronic under control. You can see a counselor or psychologist that deals specifically with stress, or you can find someone with a general practice. There are some medications you can take, but it’s recommended that you see a doctor first.

Chronic bloating is chronic, but it can be treated with the right methods.

We see them advertised all over the place. These are also freely available anywhere; from the food stores to your local supermarkets. The energy drinks also claim some absurd claims which become pretty hard to believe, at times. The fact of the matter is not every energy drink is the same.

What are energy drinks?

Energy drinks are beverages like Red Bull, Venom, Adrenaline Rush, 180, ISO Sprint, and Whoopass, which contain large doses of caffeine and other legal stimulants like ephedrine, guarana, and ginseng. Energy drinks may contain as much as 80 mg of caffeine, the equivalent of a cup of coffee. Compared to the 37 mg. of caffeine in a Mountain Dew, or the 23 mg. in a Coca-Cola Classic, that’s a big punch.

The Health Dangers of Energy Drinks

Nu-Train comments: In 1997, with the introduction of Red Bull, energy drinks began as a significant category in the US market. Since then, the market has grown by 50% almost yearly, and the energy drink market now totals more than four billion dollars. Clearly, this indicates that many Americans are consuming these caffeine laden trendy beverages, but are they really that good for us.

Energy Drink Dangers

There are many different trends for food and entertainment that we have seen over the years. Some trends prove timeless, like champagne at New Year’s Eve, whereas some are gone as quickly as they began. A current trend gaining popularity is energy drinks. These highly caffeinated, sugary sweet drinks are everywhere, from the stores to TV shows to the bars and they are very popular on many college campuses.

The Dangers of Energy Drinks

These drinks, when used in moderation, are relatively safe. However, when they are consumed over a prolonged period of time, high levels of certain ingredients that build up in the body over time can have major effects on the body. Some of these effects last long-term.

The ads are exciting. The names are enticing. Red Bull. Adrenaline Rush. Whoopass. They are part of an ever-growing list of popular energy drinks marketed to the under thirties crowd, a market that used to belong to soft drink companies like Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

Dangers Of Metabolism Boosters

The main purpose of metabolism boosting substances is to assist body when exercising. They are there to accelerate calorie burning process. There is a common misperception that metabolism boosters can replace the role of physical activity in loosing weight. Fault for this belief lies partly by online diet marketers. Last 5 years are known as “diet spamming” period.

The truth is, not all energy drinks are the same. While many of the ingredients are common among them, each energy drink has its own little twist to it. And reading the labels of these drinks isn’t going to help the average consumer much if they don’t know what to look for

Energy drinks with booze

Alcohol can be twice as dangerous when mixed with an energy drink, according to a new study published two weeks ago by Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

Super-caffeinated energy drinks, with names like Red Bull, Monster,

Full Throttle and Amp, have surged in popularity in the past decade.

About a third of 12- to 24-year-olds say they regularly down energy

drinks, which account for more than $3 billion in annual sales in the

United States.

A ectopic pregnancy is an abnormal pregnancy which occurs apart from the uterus (uterus). The ectopic pregnancy is a complication of pregnancy in which the fertilized ovule is established in any fabric other than the uterine wall. The signs and the symptoms of the ectopic pregnancy can involve missed periods, the tenderness of centre, nausea, the vomiting, or the urination frequent. The first panels of warning of a ectopic pregnancy are often pain or bleeding. The majority of the women describe the pain like pointed and stabbing. It can concentrate on a side of the basin and come and enter or change in the intensity. There are many causes of the ectopic pregnancies.

A certain cause include is infection or the ignition of the fallopian tube can make it become incompletely or entirely blocked. The fabric of scar left of a preceding infection or an operation on the tube can also prevent the movement of the egg . The preceding surgery in the pelvic sector or on the tubes can cause adherences. An anomaly in the shape of the tube can be caused by abnormal growths. The women who have the in vitro fertilization or who have an intra-uterine device (IUD) to also employ progesterone have a greater risk of ectopic pregnancy. The principal medical risk of the ectopic pregnancy is rupture carrying out to the internal bleeding.

The treatment of a ectopic pregnancy changes, reling on the size and the place of the pregnancy. There are the way two employee to treat a drug of ectopic pregnancy and the surgery. Minis-laparotomie and a laparoscopy are the surgical treatments most usual for a ectopic pregnancy which did not change. If the pregnancy is diminutive and the cut does not have, sometimes drugs can be employed instead of the surgery to treat the ectopic pregnancy. The drug stops the growth of the pregnancy and makes it possible the body to write it time of surplus. Drug the most usual employee to treat the ectopic pregnancy is methotrexate.

It often is also used to treat cancer. The drug of Methotrexate stops cells of the growth, which ceases the pregnancy. An alternative treatment the surgery is a medicine called the methotrexate (Maxtrex), which reduces the progress of the cells in the ectopic pregnancy. Methotrexate frequently is given by the injection in an amount. In certain cases, it can be given in many amounts above much days. You boat prevent a ectopic pregnancy, but you can reduce much factors of risk.

Hepatitis (plural hepatitides) implies injury to the liver characterized by the presence of inflammatory cells in the tissue of the organ. The name is from ancient Greek hepar (????) or hepato- (?????-), meaning liver, and suffix -itis, meaning “inflammation” (c. 1727)[1]. The condition can be self-limiting, healing on its own, or can progress to scarring of the liver. Hepatitis is acute when it lasts less than six months and chronic when it persists longer. A group of viruses known as the hepatitis viruses cause most cases of liver damage worldwide. Hepatitis can also be due to toxins (notably alcohol), other infections or from autoimmune process.

How does hepatitis affect the liver?

The liver breaks down waste products in your blood. When the liver is inflamed, it doesn’t do a good job of getting rid of waste products. One waste product in the blood, called bilirubin (say “billy-roo-bin”), begins to build up in the blood and tissues when the liver isn’t working right. The bilirubin makes the skin of a person with hepatitis turn a yellow-orange color. This is called jaundice (say “john-dis”).

What Are the Signs and Symptoms?

Hepatitis infection causes inflammation of the liver, which means that the liver becomes swollen and damaged and begins losing its ability to function. People with hepatitis often get symptoms similar to those caused by other virus infections, such as weakness, tiredness, and nausea. Because the symptoms of hepatitis are similar to other conditions, it’s easy for a person who has it to confuse it with another illness. In addition, people with hepatitis A may not show any symptoms of the infection, so the infection can go undiagnosed.

What causes it?

The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is transmitted from individual to individual through contact with infected bodily fluids, such as blood. Because chronic carriers of HBV are often unaware that they have the virus, they may transmit the disease to others unknowingly. Injecting illegal drugs with contaminated needles or unprotected sexual contact with an infected individual are common ways to become infected. S

Hepatocellular carcinoma is much more common in males than in females, although much of this is likely due to differences in behaviors affecting the risk factors described below. The fibrolamellar subtype of HCC occurs in about equal numbers in both sexes.

Autoimmune chronic hepatitis accounts for about 20% of all chronic hepatitis cases. Like other autoimmune disorders, this condition develops because a genetically defective immune system attacks the body’s own cells and organs, in this case, the liver, after being triggered by an environmental agent, probably a virus. Suspects include the measles virus, a hepatitis virus, or the Epstein-Barr virus, which causes mononucleosis. It is also possible that a reaction to a drug or other toxin that affects the liver also triggers an autoimmune response in susceptible individuals.

Prevention:

The following hepatitis vaccines are available:

Hepatitis A vaccine is available for people in high-risk groups, like day care and nursing home workers, laboratory workers, and those traveling to parts of the world where hepatitis is common.

What’s the treatment?

The majority of people with hepatitis B don’t need specific treatment other than rest and they eventually make a full recovery.

If the infection lasts more than six months (chronic hepatitis infection), a hospital liver specialist may recommend an antiviral drug treatment called alpha interferon. This treatment aims to reduce the risk of permanent liver damage (cirrhosis) and liver cancer.

Medical Treatment

If you are dehydrated, your doctor may prescribe IV fluid to help you feel better.

If you are experiencing significant nausea and vomiting, you will receive medicines to control these symptoms.

Wrist and metacarpal injuries are more common in contact sports, racquet sports, and gymnastics. The wrist represents one of the most complicated regions of the musculoskeletal anatomy. It is comprised of 15 bones, 27 articular surfaces, and an elaborate system of ligaments that maintain these bones and surfaces in proper relation to one another.

The wrist joint is formed proximally by the distal surface of the radius and ulna and the attached fibrocartillage disc, and distally by the scaphoid, lunate and triquetral bones. The wrist as a region extends from the distal radius and ulna to the base of the metacarpals. The wrist positions and supports the hand and therefore has to combine strength and precision with a wide range of movement with stability.

Wrist pain is common. Repetitive motion can damage your wrist. Everyday activities like typing, racquet sports or sewing can cause pain, or even carpal tunnel syndrome. Wrist pain with bruising and swelling can be a sign of injury. The signs of a possible fracture include misshapen joints and inability to move your wrist. Some wrist fractures are a result of osteoporosis.

Causes
You can also have wrist pain from repetitive use that results in an inflammation of the tendons (tendonitis). This is termed a repetitive motion injury and is really not a true sprain. Carpal tunnel syndrome is another common wrist injury that may occur from repetitive motion.

Symptoms
When an injury occurs, pain and swelling are the main symptoms. The wrist may become discolored and bruised. Doctors refer to this as ecchymosis. The wrist may remain painful for several weeks. There are no specific symptoms that allow your doctor to determine whether a wrist ligament injury has occurred.

Typically, there will be pain, tenderness, swelling, or bruising of the injured wrist. If the injury is serious, you may have trouble moving the wrist.

Wrist Injury Treatment
If there is no fracture seen on the x-ray, the doctor may diagnose a sprain. In cases where there is tenderness in the anatomical snuffbox, the doctor may also suspect there may be a fracture of the scaphoid that is not apparent on the x-rays.

For more severe sprains, you will likely be given a Velcro wrist splint that you can take on and off. Also you might be prescribed some form of pain medication. You should make sure that you let the doctor know what other medications you are taking and any allergies that you have.

Corticosteroid injection for carpal tunnel improves symptoms in more than half of patients; surgical intervention to release the transverse ligament and decompress the nerve entrapment may be indicated

NSAIDs reduce inflammation and use of cock-up splints applied during activities and while sleeping reduces strain from repetitive use and reduces symptoms

When I first started out in feng shui classes, I have to admit- my view of what feng shui encompassed was very limited. I had only been exposed to the western version in which you manipulate the objects in a space in order to clear a path for a clean flow of energy. Now, I wasn’t wrong about that, but I really wasn’t seeing the whole picture. Going back to the historic origins of feng shui, the actual purpose was to create balance between the heavens and the earth. This manifested in the laws of astronomy and geography as we know them today. Feng shui was used to select appropriate sites to build homes upon, for both agriculture and in selecting burial sites.

Today’s use has certainly been modernized quite a bit, but the intention is the same. Feng shui is used to create a positive flow of Qi to affect the life of the practitioner. Common focuses for this good energy are health, prosperity, and relationships. Anything that draws positive energy to a person and shunts negative energy away is a good thing, as far as I am concerned. One important aspect that I learned about during my feng shui training is the concept of space clearing. Now that I know about it, it makes so much more sense to me- if there is negative or stuck energy in a space, the correct action is to release that energy and assist it in leaving the space, rather than trying to overpower it with positive energy or charms.

What might one do with a feng shui certification? Well, the possibilities are really endless. There is of course, the role it can play in your personal life. It would be pointless, and really quite stupid to go about getting feng shui training and not apply it to your own life. Whether you are making small adjustments in your current home, using it to design the floor-plan of your new home, or working with space -clearing both at home and in your office, this is something that you must do for yourself. Frankly, not to do so would be against the principles you are learning to embrace. You cannot help others to channel positive Qi into their lives if you’re unable to do it in your own.

Secondly, your feng shui certification can be used towards your own career or prosperity- after all, sharing the knowledge of feng shui is certainly a good way to bring positive energy to yourself and your loved ones! It would be a great addition for people already working in the home design or decorating field, or even those doing the work of planning the architectural layout of homes. Many people are interested in a more conscious building style these days.

Another option is for people like me, who work in the life-coaching field. I started off with feng shui classes for personal interest, but soon realized that I had gained a powerful tool for helping many of my clients. As a life coach in all walks of life, and I always treat them with a holistic approach. Their home situation, their relationships, all of that is something that I look at as a part of what makes them who they are. When they can create a better space to live and work, it often supports them very well in making the other life changes that they desire to make in life.

Doctors are frantically scurrying to annhilate detox out of the sphere of influence, making claims that invalidate and attack internal cleansing methods, labeling them “dangerous,” and “ineffective.” The scare tactics being employed by M.D.’s, however, can be demystified with a little common sense. Allow me to explain why the medical industry wants to boot detox off the radar screen by addressing the three biggest “myths” told by doctors and spun by journalists:

1. The body is already capable of detoxing itself. Isn’t this a nice thought? See, this would be true if a person were in a perfect state of health, entirely free of toxins in the first place. Given that 100% of people are exposed to toxins through food, water, pesticides, cleaning products, pollution, and loads of invisible environmental toxins on a daily basis, it is safe to assume that all of us are, on some level, toxic. Doctors claim that the body is capable of eliminating these toxins effectively without the aid of a detox program. The problem, however, is that toxic overload, (which often results simply from consuming processed, packaged food over a lifetime) inhibits the body from being able to eliminate waste and other toxic material quickly enough. The result is essentially a “clogged” digestive tract that is unable to absorb nutrients properly. Furthermore, disease cannot exist in an alkaline, oxygenated enviroment. ____________ won the Nobel Peace price in 1XXX for this discovery. Given this idea, people would not suffer from chronic health ailments or disease at all unless they were internally toxic on some level. Disease thrives in an acidic environment, and detoxing assists the body in obtaining a more alkaline state.

2. Detox is dangerous. The only thing dangerous about detox is that it threatens the very foundation of western medicine. Think about it. If people could obtain vibrant health without the use of drugs or invasive surgeries, then there goes the billion dollar pharmeceutical industry and the careers of many doctors. Medical M.D.’s have every reason to critcize and debunk a practice that directly threatens their jobs. Yet, this claim is not only based on defending the medical profession, but also a great deal of ignorance. Typically, medical school programs spend about a day covering material about nutrition. The heart of detox is based on how foods affect the internal atmosphere of the body, and using the right foods, herbs, and natural supplements to correct imbalances. One day of nutrition out of several years of study cannot possibly afford doctors enough information to understand the concept of detox. So, why do doctors claim detox is dangerous? Probably based on the symptoms that many people experience when first undertaking a detox regime: headaches, nausea, fatigue, and other vague symptoms that may resemble a flu or cold. What is common knowledge in the Ayurvedic, holistic, and detox health community has obviously escaped doctors—the idea of the “healing crisis”. What happens during a detox can be compared to washing a pan that has crusted food stuck to the bottom. The toxic debris that get stored in our bodies is suddenly released and circulating in our bloodstream and throughout our cells before being eliminated, causing symptoms resembling illness the first few days of a detox. Often times, physical symptoms from previous diseases will surface, as residual traces have been stored in the body. Think about the dirty pan. Adding a cleansing agent like water will loosen debris so it can be washed away. A healing crisis, contrary to popular belief, is a good sign that the detox is working properly. It is no more “dangerous” than getting the oil changed for your car. The rewards of sticking it out through a healing crisis are far greater than staying toxic.

3. Detox involves eliminating food groups and deprives you of proper nutrition Only in America do people gasp at the idea of deprivation. The overly –indulgent nature of our society is most likely the cause of nutrition deprivation. Eating processed crap will certainly starve my body of much needed nutrients. The claim that doctors make in regard to detox is that it is not healthy to eliminate certain food groups. However, this is only partially true. Detoxing doesn’t always involve cutting carbs, going vegetarian, or giving up sugar. When it does, it serves an important purpose by allowing the body to restore digestive functions and eliminate toxins effectively. Certain detox regimes, such as the Master Cleanse or juicing, do involve eliminating solid foods, gluten, meat, or other things for a period of time. However, giving up steak and potatoes or candy bars for a month is not putting you in danger of nutritional deficiencies. Clinical studies have proven that vegans and vegetarians can acquire the same amount of nutrients and proteins from plant sources as meat-eaters. Additionally, detox programs are short in duration, meaning that you can’t adopt a nutrient deficiency if you decide to juice fast for a week. Granted, it is always wise to speak to a health care practitioner about your needs if you have conditions like diabetes or hypoglycemia, yet most people can safely detox and will not be nutritionally deprived. Another thing to consider about this myth is that giving up certain foods does not mean you are eliminating an entire food group. White bread, for example, can be replaced with sprouted grains, rye, or spelt. Processed sugar can be replaced with natural sugar. The protein in meat can be exchanged for nuts and seeds. Detoxing does not have to be about deprivation and starvation. If you don’t want to drink maple syrup and lemonade for 10 days, there are plenty of foods that you can eat while doing a detox that will keep you nourished and healthy.

The medical community will continue to clamor about detox. One of their biggest claims at the moment is that there is “no data” to scientifically prove that detox is effective. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it might have something to do with the lack of scientific research even conducted on the subject. “No data” simply means that clinical studies have not been performed, evaluated, and infiltrated into the scientific and medical communities. Furthermore, something tells me that they wouldn’t be made public by the very powerhouses that would be threatened by conclusive evidence in support of the health benefits of detox. In any case, the proof is in the pudding. I’ve seen tumors shrink, a diabetic go off his insulin, and many other chronic health issues vanish with detox. As ancient Ayurvedic medicine holds, all disease starts in the GI tract. Where medical doctors and holistic doctors disagree, is how to treat the disease, with the former focusing on controlling symptoms, and the latter investigating and curing the root cause of the disease. Of course it would be difficultto prove that a certain disease went away by cleansing the digestive tract and detoxing. But the process of elimination would suggest that when nothing else works, detox is the culprit of the cure.

While western medicine certainly has its place in society (if I break my arm, a detox won’t fix it), be wary of their expertise when it comes to detox.
